‘Reimaging Aketekete through Martina's eyes’

First time we met Martina was when we showcased our products at Palo Market Fest in Barcelona. It was in May, with the sun gradually bringing warmth to the days, and everybody was just waiting for the Summer to start. She came to our stand, with a big smile and a lot of questions about Aketekete. 

3. How do you think your work and Aketekete’s story resonate? Tell us about your Aketekete choices for the shooting and what you want to communicate with it.

The first thing that caught my eye about Aketekete was the palette of colors of the pieces that Maria was showcasing on behalf of Aketekete at the Palo Alto Market. She was lovely and very excited to explain the brand’s roots to me. At that moment I was looking for new brands to create the 'Brand Image' and I instantly saw this as a challenge to find an aesthetic that shows customers the story of this brand.

First I immersed myself in Aketekete and Ghana’s history and roots, to find ideas that helped me describe the brand through images. I chose a minimalistic style with neutral colors so the accessories will take all the attention. These colorful accessories stand out in every picture. I also wanted to give the brand a unique aesthetic, elevate the product, and show it as an art piece.

The result of this work was delicate and vivid images that show the accessories' essence.

4. How has the spirit of Barcelona inspired your lifestyle?

When I first moved here I was amazed by the multicultural and cosmopolitan environment in the City. I love learning about different cultures, especially trying new food and listening to music.

After some time here, I can tell it inspired me to share my own traditions throughout my work.

5. Three Favorite things to do in Barcelona

It is very hard to choose only three things, but these are some of my favorites;

• Marula Cafe: It's a nightclub with live music and an open mic for people to get to the stage and sing or play any instrument. Every night is different: funk, salsa, rock, ¡everything!

• Balt Sessions: Small live music and art in an intimate place. Different artists play and paint, there is also vegan food and wine or vermouth.

• Fet al Born: is a design and crafts fair in El Born neighborhood, where you can find many emerging designers and artists.

6. What’s your greatest advice when it comes to creating a look that defines who you are?

Knowing who you are and what you like is the first step, and it's a dynamic process. Never be scared to experiment, try new things, and pick up knowledge from others.

7. How do you envision your own development over the next few years?

I'm aiming to put myself in an even better position to continue developing brand identities for small and sustainable businesses, supporting the expansion of entrepreneurs. I would love to do this in other countries, exploring new places and meeting new creatives everywhere.
